Today Pastor Mike was preaching on the Apostles Creed – what is it, why do we say it, and what does it mean? Today was part 1 of a 2 part series. As I thought about a topic for the Children’s Sermon, I decided to focus on the first 3 statements of the Apostles Creed. After all, there is no time like the present to begin explaining this to our youth.
I read the opening 3 statements to them:
I believe in God the Father, maker of heaven and earth.
And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord
Who was conceived by the Holy Spirit born of the Virgin Mary
What we believe is this: we believe in one God, but there are 3 persons:
God, the Father
God, the Son and
God, the Holy Spirit
These 3 are what we call the Trinity – “tri” means 3. There are 3 members of the Trinity. Does that make sense? How can one God be 3 persons?
I used this Celtic Knot to explain the Trinity to our youth.

As I traced the Trinity knot loop pattern, we found out that there’s no beginning or end. It’s all one connected line! Although God is God the Father, God the Son, and God the Spirit – they are not three Gods but all the same God. The circle in the knot pattern reminds us that God is ONE God and also THREE Persons.
The loops are equal and 100% God. Each loop is made of the same ‘material’ - the same ‘God material’. What is this ‘God material’? Scripture has the answer.
And so we know and rely on the love God has for us. God is love. Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in them.
1 JOHN 4:16 (NIV)
Love! God is made of love!
Here, let me show you how I explained this.
That’s a lot of love! And it never stops! It keeps flowing between each of the Persons in the Trinity. How to Explain the Trinity to Children | Free Printable (ahearttoknow.com)
Now where are we in this picture? Right at the very center of God. God invites us to live with Him, surrounded by and filled will all His love.
