Searching for the Right Seed

Updated: Feb 10, 2021

Here in the beautiful mountains of the Blue Ridge, it is extremely quiet except for God’s creation. I hear a waterfall, songs of birds, and occasionally a fly. While sitting on the deck, I noticed that various types of birds were visiting the bird feeder, not seemingly bothered by my presence. How wonderful to be here again!

As I paid more attention to the feeder and its visitors, I noticed a small bird settle on the feeder’s post, poke its head in the feeder, and pull out a seed. How awesome to watch this hungry bird eat from about 6 feet away! Next thing I knew, he spit out the seed he had in his mouth! What?? Not only that, but he did it 3 times! On the 4th time, he picked out his seed, kept it in his beak, and flew off (I assume to enjoy HIS particular seed!)

I have never seen that happen before. Was he purposefully searching for a seed that he liked and not any old seed? I guess that’s why the bird food bags tell us that their food feeds 20 types of birds, and it’s a good product for attracting many classifications of birds. He knew what seed he wanted, and he found it.

We see seeds in the natural as a means of food for birds and a means of producing food on the farm. Spiritually “The seed is the Word of God …., and the ground is our hearts .... Our hearts were created by God to bring forth fruit when His Word is planted in them. Just as a seed has to remain in the ground over time to germinate, so the Word of God has to abide in us.”

The Word of God does abide in us as we see during Pentecost. This is what God placed in my spirit: thoughts of Pentecost. Pentecost?

Acts 2:1-8 “When the Day of Pentecost had fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. 2 And suddenly there came a sound from heaven, as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting. 3 Then there appeared to them divided tongues, as of fire, and one sat upon each of them. 4 And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.

5 And there were dwelling in Jerusalem Jews, devout men, from every nation under heaven. 6 And when this sound occurred, the multitude came together, and were confused, because everyone heard them speak in his own language. 7 Then they were all amazed and marveled, saying to one another, “Look, are not all these who speak Galileans? 8 And how is it that we hear, each in our own language in which we were born?”

While still working at Murdoch Developmental Center, I was once walking across our campus on the way back to my office. Near the entrance to the campus is a median area lined with about 15 trees. As I drew closer to those trees, I heard a loud noise which came from "who knows how many" various types of birds all singing at the tops of their lungs. It was extremely loud and not at all melodious! At that instant, God put "Pentecost" in my Spirit just like He did today. Maybe that was how it sounded!

In the Murdoch story, those birds all shouted together some message which could only be understood in each of their own song languages. In the scripture, the people were all drawn together as one body to hear one message about the Word of God, and it had to be in their own language to be understood. The birds here on the mountain have to find the “seed” that is right for them and satisfies their needs.

We need to find our seeds (God’s message) every day just like the titmouse and yellow finch. God’s message is tailored to each individual about the love of Christ. The overall message is the same, but He speaks/communicates with us in different ways/with different frequencies/with different messages meant just for us. He knows just what we need each and every day; He knows where we are in our walk with Him; He knows what “nourishment” we have need of; He knows when/where/how to provide for us. Each of us, like that small bird, may reject or not retain a message (seed) that we hear or read and not understand why. It is because it is not intended for us right now. Maybe some other time in our life/walk, but not right now.

Thank you, Father God, that you know what I need, when I need it, how to receive it, and how to understand it is for me!

Thanks for stopping by,

Rachel
