Jesus, the Bread of Life: how far will you go to get it?

Updated: Feb 3, 2021

I don't know about you, but I absolutely LOVE bread! All kinds of homemade bread and especially right out of the oven or bread maker! Hmmmm.... When thinking about this, I began reading John 6 starting with verse 22. This section is called "Jesus the bread of life".

As this section begins, throngs of people were looking for Jesus after being fed with the twelve loaves and fishes and went across the sea to find him in Capernaum. He recognized that they had put forth the effort to find him, and he said to them:

Jesus knew that they had sought after him because of the Word he had taught, and they liked what they wanted to know more.

Do you ever wonder how hard you would try and how far you would go to hear the Word of God? Travel was not as easy in Jesus’ day as it is today. In fact, it’s like comparing apples to oranges. When we lived in Durham, we attended a ministry in Henderson which was 50 minutes from our house. When people would ask where we attended church and we told them, they thought we had moved to Henderson. They couldn’t understand why we traveled so far to attend church. Sure there were times when we dragged our feet, but those were few. We also have a neighbor who travels back to Durham at least twice a week to worship in their church there. I think it is unusual to travel a distance for the Word, but you will if the truth of the Word is being taught.

Verse 27 reads: Labour not for the meat which perisheth.

Jesus is telling the people not to waste their time on “meat” which perishes or turns bad. That type of meat is what we eat in the natural within a set number of days or it will spoil. It will only satisfy us for an hour or two. Then we are looking for something else to eat. It becomes a choice for us of what to eat. But remember:

The last part of verse 27 reads: labour for that meat which endureth unto everlasting life.

“Labour” in the Greek means to toil or commit to. We have to work hard to get it, but it will endureth, which means to stay, abide, dwell, remain. We won’t feel empty in an hour or two after consuming this Word, the bread of life. But we will be hungry for more of it! The more we consume the Word of God, the stronger our physical bodies (God's temple) and the more knowledgeable our minds will be when filled with scripture, which is a means of fending off the enemy! (Ephesians 6:17)

John 6:35 And Jesus said unto them, I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall never hunger; and he that believeth on me shall never thirst.

When you come to Jesus and believe on him, you shall never be spiritually hungry or thirsty again! This is the bread that I want! How about you?

Thanks for stopping by,

Rachel
