This devotional by Cindy Trimm (Commanding Your Morning) brought to mind some questions about where we pray, how long we pray, and is it OK to be different from others in answers to these questions?
Recently I drove to a meeting about 30 minutes away, and I’ll have to say that I was looking forward to driving alone. Those are some of the most precious times for me to commune with God, and yesterday was no exception. I was in prayer the entire time - praying for the meeting, the leader, every person there, the mission of this meeting, and other situations on my heart. By the time I arrived, my entire body and mind were at peace and joyful. Oh, how God works!!
Yet I must tell you that it is very difficult for me to pray for that length of time (or any time longer than 5-10 minutes) at home. What is that all about? I am praying to the same God in a quiet house in no particular position or location. Well, the answer is so obvious to me - it is the environment that is different. In my house are all sorts of distractions - work to be done piled around my desk, cleaning that is needed when I see the dust on the desk in our bedroom, food that needs to be cooked in the kitchen, and don’t even let me go in the family room where the TV is!!
When I am driving, God has removed all of the distractions of everyday life. Either my mind will wander to various issues of the day or week OR my heart and mind begin to pray and just talk to God (yes, out loud!) Please understand that I am also focused on driving and what is happening around me! I am wondering how it works for you?
What about the time of day when you pray? I used to only have purposeful prayer time with God late at night and felt that was wrong because everything one reads about prayer time tells us to pray in the morning when we arise. And I get that! It makes perfect sense to begin the day that way, but it wasn’t happening for me. One day, I “confessed” this to a very dear friend who reassured me that God doesn’t worry about what time of day you talk with him; just so you do it! Since beginning this blog, mornings have become precious times for me (as long as the house is quiet!) because I do much of my writing then and have God-time then. God can change us!
So I shall continue this journey of talking with God throughout the day and having that purposeful prayer time when it is right for God and me. He is always open and available - 24/7 - to hear from us - his precious sons, priests, and lords.
1 Peter 2:9 But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light.
Let’s continue the unique relationship that each of us has with God. He must certainly love variety because he made each of us unique and marvelous!! Keep the light shining in yourself for others by praying as He leads you!
Thanks for stopping by,
Rachel
